Crown (Cap)
A crown (or cap) is used to protect the natural tooth structure against the forces it’s exposed to on a regular basis. If the tooth has little of its natural structure left, a foundation needs to be built on the tooth so that the crown can rest on a solid structure.
Reasons for a Crown or Cap
- A tooth has little natural tooth structure left – this is the case when a tooth has an extensive filling making it very prone to fracture.
- After a tooth undergoes a root canal and loses most of its natural structure or becomes very dry and brittle, it can be very prone to fracture.
- A tooth has a modest crack (not too deep); a crown can protect the tooth and prevent the crack from getting bigger.
If you think you need a crown/cap, we would be glad to discuss your treatment options and show you examples during your consultation appointment.
