Milk and other dairy products contain minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which both contribute to strengthening bone and tooth enamel. Dairy products also contain caseins, which are proteins that form a layer on the enamel to protect it from harmful acids that swirl around the teeth after eating sweets. It’s best to drink milk after a sugary snack instead of before or during in order to lower your mouth’s acidic levels.
However, there are instances in which milk can actually have adverse effects; if milk stays in the mouth for too long, its natural sugars can damage the teeth and cause cavities— so don’t put your child to bed with a bottle of milk!
